Eating disorders are complex. They are caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. In therapy we can explore factors that contribute to the onset and maintenance of an individual's eating disorder.
There is a huge misconception that eating disorders are simply about food and weight. In fact, encouraging dieting for someone who is struggling with binging will actually continue to perpetuate the eating disorder. I consider myself a Health at Every Size (HAES) informed therapist and follow Intuitive eating principles. I also work with individuals in therapy to address their disordered behaviors while addressing other underlying issues with which they may be struggling.
I use a blend of different evidence based techniques in my work with clients. It is all based on what that individual needs. Some of the modalities that I utilize include mindfulness based techniques, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I also work with clients who have experienced trauma and therefore am trauma informed in my approach with all clients.
This completely depends on the individual. Every person is unique with unique circumstances. Therefore, therapy is tailored to the individual. We may meet twice a week, weekly, or every other week depending on what you need. You and I will discuss goals and progress along the way.
